Blackboard Blackboard News You Can Use

Welcome back to Blackboard News You Can Use, your brief monthly newsletter to help you promote student success through MATC’s web-based learning environment, Blackboard Learn. In this edition, we share a few reminders and exciting updates.

Spring Final Grades are Due By Wednesday, May 29th 5:00 PM

Per the Registrar’s Office, submit final course grades by May 29th 5:00 PM CST. After this time, the Registrar’s Office will make final grading submission temporarily unavailable. While grading is available, faculty may submit final grades directly from Blackboard through the ILP Integration tool. Additional information about this tool is available in the FAQ.

Blackboard Updates – We’re Getting a New Look in June 2019

On Thursday May 30th starting at 5:00 PM CST, Blackboard will receive a routine maintenance update to Blackboard 9.1 version 3700.0.0. The update process will take approximately 24 hours to complete with no expected downtime. See these details for more information.

By Monday June 3rd, Blackboard’s home page and base navigation will have a fresh new look! Your current courses will not change, but you are invited to pilot Ultra Courses, a new form of course design. Take a look at the Blackboard Ultra Preview Presentation and the Getting Started Page to see what’s coming. If you would like to join the Ultra Course pilot, contact tltdept@matc.edu.

Career Essentials Drop-In Support Available in Faculty Innovation Center (M201)

Faculty should set up a Career Essentials Assessment in their courses with a rubric and goal alignment. On Wednesday, May 8th between 1:30-4:30 PM, faculty are invited to stop by the faculty computer lounge to briefly review how to correctly set up Career Essentials with faculty liaison Danica Olson.

Internet Explorer is Not Compatible with Blackboard!

Microsoft no longer updates Internet Explorer and it is now obsolete! To avoid technical and security problems, use an up-to-date supported browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

Blackboard End of Semester Process

At the end of each semester, instructors teaching within Blackboard must perform a series of tasks called the End of the Semester Process. This process is helpful for preserving a record of an instructor’s course content, Grade Center, and student work in an Archive file.

Summer Blackboard Training Schedule

Faculty who are looking for training in the use of Blackboard to support their teaching practice are encouraged to enroll in Professional Development’s free 1 credit courses this summer. See the Summer 2019 Schedule for details.

Reminder – All Instructional Video Must Have Closed Captions

Per MATC’s Closed Caption Policy, faculty who provide instructional videos to students must ensure that they are accompanied by closed captions that describe the video’s content. Closed captions are required by law and are beneficial for all learners.  See this resource guide to support your efforts towards satisfying this requirement. Remember – NBC Learn and Films on Demand are sources of closed-captioned video for your courses.
